Historic MYC Trophy Dedication at Awards Banquet Sept 29th 09/17/12 03:10pm
Minnetonka Yacht Club is proud to announce the donation and dedication of a very special trophy at our upcoming Awards Banquet on September 29th. The trophy, whose donors wish to remain anonymous until the Banquet, is one of the Club's first trophies. In the 1880's and 1890's, it was awarded each week to winners of the Club's races, when boats were custom-built by members with few design limits, and pure boat speed often determined the outcome. It was for weekly possession of this trophy that racing yacht design evolved in just a few decades from the slow sandbaggers of the Club's first years, to the fast planing boats, including the famous Onawa, that were the forerunners of today's scows and other racing yachts. The trophy is returning to the Club after nearly a century. It is a silver punchbowl, 30 inches tall, beautifully engraved with sailboats of the era, and topped by a female figure representing Victory. Two silk racing pennants from the 1880's and 1890's will also be given to the Club. See the trophy's dedication and first award at the MYC Awards Banquet on Lighthouse Island, Saturday, September 29th. You'll also be able to see the Club's incredible collection of over 100 historic trophies.

Commodore's Note on Labor Day & the Youth Awards 09/03/09 08:57am
The Labor Day party is fast approaching, and the summers sailing season is nearing its end. Now is the time to focus some attention on the youth of our club. We have a fabulous history of recognizing our youth programs and the many accomplishments of our kids. This year is no exception. I would encourage those who attend the Labor Day party to stay for the award ceremony. This year the awards program should be exceptional, I know the parent volunteers have been planning lots of interesting and novel ways to ward the trophies and keep the adults entertained during the awards presentation. There is no better way to show your support for our youth programs than to be involved and present at the youth awards. I look forward to seeing you at the awards programs and out on the water for the last few races.
Sincerely, Ray Haverstock Commodore
