The Journey - by Erik Bowers

The Olympic Selection process was a whirlwind. Hard fight with Charlie Buckingham in both Miami & Palma. In the end, the Trials served their purpose and the best guy was selected to represent the USA at the Rio Olympics. I have come a long way since 2013. In that time I've been fortunate to train with and compete against Charlie all over the World . As the saying goes, "Iron sharpens iron." My skills have certainly improved sailing against Charlie. From here, I will continue to train and compete in Mexico at the 2016 Worlds in May. Then maybe one more regatta, followed by Rio training in June and July, prior to the Olympics in August. I will see this process through to the end, even though I'm only a sparring partner for the top guy. With the level my skills have reached, surrounded by the right structure and people, it's hard to say "NO" to more Lasering in the future.  Maru Urban has been a fantastic coach for the Trials process. Both on and off the water. Perhaps we will work together again in the future.  I want to end by thanking my teammates on the US Sailing Team Sperry, the US Sailing Team Sperry staff and coaches, my friends, family, supporters, donors, everyone at the Minnetonka Yacht Club, the ILYA, and the Lake Minnetonka Sailing School. Last and most important are my parents and sister who rode the ups and downs of the last 4 years with me. I know they will be supportive of whatever path I choose going forward.  Cheers, Erik
